In his first year of racing he won the club championship in kid karts at Willow Springs, as well as a victory in the regional championship series. He finished the season with numerous victories for two seconds and a third in the year-end point standings. 2009 was highlighted by earning pole position in the final for the Rotax Grandnationals held in Oklahoma before racing to a sixth place finish.
